The team for Sustainable Development is responsible for fundraising with institutional donors and ensuring good quality project cycle management. Its programming focusses on climate smart and resilient livelihoods as well as women’s rights. The Project Manager will manage a portfolio of land restoration, agroforestry, projects and will advise the CARE Nederland programming team on the topic. Further projects may be allocated based on need and capacity.

The successful candidate will report to the Head of Sustainable Development.

What will you be doing?

You will be managing a portfolio of projects that are part of the Restore Africa Program, a consortium program managed by the Global Evergreening Alliance. The aim of the program is to improve livelihoods, food security and resilience to climate change through restoring ecosystem services and improved management of agricultural, pastoral and forest areas contributing to emissions reductions. Although the larger program is implemented in six countries (Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Kenya, and Ethiopia), the incumbent will support in the beginning CARE offices in Ethiopia, Malawi and Tanzania, with CARE being consortium lead in Tanzania and consortium partner in Malawi and Ethiopia.

As a signatory to the Global Evergreening Alliance, CARE Nederland analyses and explores opportunities for collaboration with the GEA globally. The project manager coordinates opportunities for follow up by relevant project managers (responsible for specific countries/regions), advocacy officers, communication officers and CARE International.

As Project Manager, you will act in the following areas:

Project and quality management

  • Ensures quality project cycle management of the projects related to land restoration, carbon credits and natural regeneration.
  • Advises internal and external (CARE International and other external stakeholders) on the implementation and realisation of the projects, in compliance with the donor contract and regulations.
  • Monitors, evaluates and analyses (financial) project progress and results, reports and advises relevant management and relevant stakeholders.
  • Contributes to the development of new projects and advises on project opportunities, including actively analysing and exploring possibilities for similar funding.

Knowledge management

  • Identifies and analyses developments, translates them into notes/advice for policy, advocacy strategies, projects and/or other trajectories.
  • Advises other project managers/management on the expertise area, including FMNR and related practices, carbon credit mechanisms.
  • Contributes to the realisation of knowledge products and processes related to expertise area.
  • Exchanges with CARE International and Climate Justice Center on learning and reciprocal advice of the country teams implementing land restoration and carbon credit projects.

Relationship management

  • Maintains contacts with the Global Evergreening Alliance, and represents CARE Nederland in relevant meetings/events.
  • Acquires, analyses, develops and maintains relevant networks (national and international) for the development of partnerships and the realisation of project and organisational objectives.
  • Represents CARE Nederland in relevant platforms (national and international), conveys CARE Nederland’s views.
  • Exchanges with CARE International and the Climate Justice Center of CARE for smooth coordination and harmonised communication.

What do you bring to the table?

  • General theoretical and practically oriented knowledge of carbon credit mechanisms, agroforestry, agricultural livelihoods, climate resilience, and the role of women.
  • An academic background (minimum HBO).
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar position, at least 2 years outside of Europe.
  • Insight into the organisation’s identity, task and working method.
  • Insight into process-related and professional relationships within and across projects.
  • Proficiency in the English language and at least another language.
  • Skills in advising and communicating in an intercultural environment.
  • Proficiency in developing projects and proposal development coordination.
  • Skills in monitoring, evaluating, analysing (financial) project results.
  • Skills in analysing relevant trends.
