BACKGROUND

Y-ACT, Youth in Action is a multi-country youth-led initiative established in 2017 at Amref Health Africa. With a current presence in over 21 countries in Africa, Y-ACT mentors support and increase the capacity of youth advocates and youth-led organizations to influence youth health policy and resource priorities. Y-ACT believes that Africa’s youth have a huge opportunity to shift policy landscapes to address challenges that the youth face and subsequently achieve their full potential. Y-ACT’s network comprises youth-led organizations in 21 countries. Since its inception Y-ACT has been funded at a total of US $11.5M from various partners, contributing to movement building, youth advocacy and capacity strengthening of youth-led organizations in the region.

JOB PURPOSE

The Organizational Capacity Strengthening Officer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating organizational capacity development initiatives of grassroots organizations. He/she will work with country leads to identify areas for improvement and develop comprehensive capacity-building strategies to enhance the capacity of the organizations. The Officer will also collaborate with various stakeholders, including staff members and external partners, to provide capacity-strengthening training, technical assistance, and guidance on organizational development processes. The primary objective is to build the organization's capabilities, enhance its performance, and foster sustainability.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Development and Capacity Strengthening

  • Develop capacity-building strategies based on the assessment findings, design and implement targeted strategies and initiatives to address identified gaps and enhance the organization's effectiveness.
  • Plan, develop, and deliver training programs, workshops, and learning sessions to build the skills and knowledge of Youth-led organizations' in areas such as leadership, project management, financial management, monitoring and evaluation, and strategic planning.
  • Support in conducting training, mentorship and coaching of youth-led partner organizations in identifying, developing capacity strengthening strategies
  • Develop monitoring and evaluation frameworks for assessing the results of capacity-building efforts and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Support in organizing and facilitating training on organizational development system strengthening and sub award management.
  • Support in the development or finalization of high-quality, standardized, capacity-strengthening materials for use and adaptation for the project

Contract and Sub-Award Management

  • Support in the development and review of award agreements and related amendments.
  • Support in the review of the sub-awardee annual work plans and progress reports

Partnership and Collaboration

  • Build strategic partnerships and collaborate with external organizations and networks to leverage additional resources, expertise, and opportunities for capacity strengthening.
  • Collaborate with the relevant staff in the organization in the monitoring and evaluation and documentation of the changes in capacity and performance of sub-awardees.
  • Support in the capacity-strengthening of all sub-awardees in the assigned countries
  • Support to plan and coordinate collaborative experiential learning opportunities for regional sub-awardees and other partners.
  • Convene and Coordinate partner/stakeholders’ meetings and proactively share updates and relevant information in team meetings.

Communication and Reporting

  • Support in developing high quality donor reports
  • Support youth led organizations in planning and designing of project activities including preparation of work plans and budgets
  • Prepare regular monthly reports on capacity strengthening activities, outcomes, and recommendations.
  • Communicate progress, challenges, and successes to relevant stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.

Project Coordination

  • Organize and facilitate partners monthly progress meeting
  • Provide coordination support for the engagement for regional activities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies, Organizational Development, Business Administration, Community Development or other relevant fields. Master's degree is an added advantage.
  • Results-based programme management for (I)NGOs and donor-funded initiatives of similar scope.
  • Strong and passionate commitment to and knowledge of youth policy and programmatic priorities in Africa

Experience

  • At least four (4) years of hands-on project experience in NGO sector, Organizational Capacity Strengthening, Contract and Sub-Award Management.
  • Experience in mentorship and coaching, organizational capacity assessments and supporting organizations to develop and implement capacity-building plans
  • Experience in advance grants management
  • Experience in program and budget management
  • Experience working with diverse and multicultural teams is necessary
  • Experience in coordinating and managing youth-led organizations
  • Demonstrable experience in mentoring and coaching Sub-awardees on Organizational development functions

Competences and skills

  • Strong process facilitation skills, with the ability to develop and implement skill-building workshops and other learning events for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Energetic, hands-on with the ability to prioritize demanding tasks and finds challenges exciting
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality, integrity, tact and discretion when dealing with diverse groups of people and processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation and networking skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
